You know that feeling on a Friday afternoon?
You've had a big week. You've given it your all but your brain has quietly packed up and gone home, while your body is valiantly pretending to be a functioning professional.
You're almost there, when someone says, "I've just got one more thing…"
For the love of all things holy. No!
We were chatting recently with a community member (shout out to you, Sam!) who described this time of year as being like ‘2pm on a Friday afternoon’, and, honestly, he's absolutely nailed it.
The great end-of-year limp
There's something about this time of year that seems to hit everyone at once.
We (all of us) are tired. Communities are stretched and businesses are running on fumes. The calendar is full, the inbox is fuller, and every second conversation starts with, "Can you believe it's nearly Christmas?"
Yes. Yes, we can. We can feel it in our bones.
We're all supposedly sprinting towards the finish line, but let's be clear: some of us are limping. LIMP-ING. Others are crawling. A few are lying face down on the track, hoping nobody notices. While a special few are high-energy panic spinning (a story for another day).
And yet, somehow, we're still expected to be firing on all cylinders – finishing projects, planning for next year, attending events, wrapping things up, kicking things off, having one workshop before Christmas (hello meetings blackhole!) – all while maintaining a fresh-from-three-weeks-in-the-Bahamas level of enthusiasm.
Professional on the outside. Sticky tape on the inside.
At Frank & Earnest, we'd love to tell you we're sailing serenely towards the end of the year, ticking off our to-do lists and thoughtfully reflecting on another year of meaningful work.
But that, frankly, would be a lie.
Don’t get me wrong – we're still showing up, still caring deeply about our clients and the work we do. Still bringing ideas, energy and our usual commitment to doing things properly.
But behind the scenes? Thumbtacks. Sticky tape. Possibly a strategically positioned bulldog clip.
Because October was a long year, and we're just holding it together, people!
And I suspect we're not alone.
Can we all just agree to be a little bit human?
There's a collective exhaustion that settles over workplaces and communities as the year winds down. Everyone's been carrying a lot.
So rather than trying to work out another productivity hack, spouting motivational quotes about finishing strong, or plotting through our 2027 goals in fresh new notebooks, maybe the best thing we can do is recognise that everyone around us is probably feeling much the same and go gently.
Maybe that person who hasn't replied to your email is drowning in their own. Or maybe the colleague who seems a little quieter than usual might has nothing left in the tank. Or maybe the business owner smiling through yet another networking is mentally calculating how many sleeps until they can stop talking to people.
We're not suggesting we all down tools. There's good work still to be done, and we'll be doing it. We're just suggesting we give ourselves, and each other, a bit of grace while we do.
A little patience. A little humour. A little kindness. And perhaps, most importantly, a collective agreement not to add any new must-be-finished-by-the-end of year projects between now and Christmas unless absolutely necessary.
So if you're feeling like it's 2pm on a Friday, we see you. And we're right there with you – professionally dressed, cheerfully answering emails and quietly held together with office supplies.
Hang in there. The metaphorical weekend's coming!
